80 injured as lightning strikes at last day of Germany's biggest festival, weekend cancelled

The last day of Germany's Rock Am Ring festival was cancelled after lightning hurt around 80 fans.

Performances were suspended on Saturday during continued thunderstorms, then 92,000 fans at the open-air event to shelter in cars and tents. Sunday was subsequently cancelled.

Organisers said they regretted the decision but accepted it was necessary because the safety of fans was of paramount importance. Critics on Facebook have accused organisers of not cancelling the event quickly enough.

11 have died in Germany over the past few weeks due to severe storms.
