Actor's Hip Hop Odyssey comes to Film

When previously successful film actor Joaquin Phoenix announced his retirement from the screen in 2008 to concentrate on a career in hip hop, most people groaned and assumed he’d be back in the films very quickly. He isn’t, and it turns out that his brother in law has been filming Phoenix’s descent into crazed semi-hip hop madness. Now that film has been picked up by Magnolia, and is going to be released.

The director / relative is Casey Affleck and some sites have dubbed the film a mockumentary rather than a documentary, so you can get a good idea of the crazyness involved. In fact, Eamonn Bowles – Magnolia’s president – said “Frankly, some of the behaviour is very extreme. But it is in the context of the insanity of being in Joaquin's life for that period of time.” These extremes include, and we’re not making this up, snorting coke off a hooker’s tits. This whole film is probably a warning, but whether it’s over trying to rap or letting your relatives film you is open to debate.
