Brian Wilson to work with Gershwin

If you think classical music is just something you give your Gran for Christmas, you best move on to the next news story. For everyone else, there’s news of an intriguing new collaboration. George Gershwin, one of the key American composers of the last century, died in 1937 with a number of unfinished works, some just fragments. Now Brian Wilson, the frazzled Beach Boy who came back triumphantly from mental illness, has been given full access to the Gershwin archives to finish, or at least work with, the fragments to produce joint pieces. These will feature on an album Wilson is doing of Gershwin covers. He said "Along with Irving Berlin, Gershwin basically invented the popular song, but he did something more. He had a gift for melody that nobody has ever equalled, yet his music is timeless and always accessible. This is the most spiritual project I've ever worked on."
