Did Paul Ryan borrow Cobain’s Bean anecdote?

People are wondering.

Earlier this week, the US electorate got to see a televised debate by the two potential vice-presidents, and the general conclusion was a hope neither of these men get to take control. But music fans have been wondering about something Republican hopeful Paul Ryan said.

During a discussion on abortion, Ryan explained "You know, I think about ten and a half years ago, my wife Janna and I went to Mercy hospital in Janesville where I was born for our seven week ultrasound for our first born child. And we saw that heartbeat. Our little baby was in the shape of a bean, and to this day we have nicknamed our first born, Liza, 'Bean'."

Which is lovely and cute, but what’s worried a few people is that Kurt Cobain named his daughter Frances Bean because when he looked at the ultrasound she looked like a kidney bean.

Hmm. I don’t think anyone’s accusing him of cynically stealing Cobain’s humanizing story for political gain, but… oh, no, that’s exactly what they’re accusing him of. However, we have to say it’s entirely possible both people arrived at this conclusion independently, but Ryan has said he’s a Nirvana fan, so maybe there was some influence in there?
