Doctor Who gets first openly gay companion unless you count Captain Jack
Pearl Mackie is pushing Doctor Who further into the modern world. Not only is she another black companion, on a show that needs more diverse actors, but she is going to be the first openly gay companion. Unless you count Captain Jack, but he was bisexual so I suppose the media are ignoring that one.

And if you think we're being flippant, we remember the great feeling of knowing there was a main character in Dr Who who was a guy who likes guys.

Steven Moffatt is still writing the show, so it’ll continue to be amazing, but as this is his last season let’s hope he’s going to be blowing the doors off all the past bias which made the show mostly white and straight.

Pearl Mackie, you are now a role model to tens of thousands of young women.
