Yup! So getting out of bed for giving the daily FIB review was never gonna be easy - "why don't you just combine it together into one giant review thing" said our editor and chief on Friday. "That's a bloody stupi...ahem genius idea" we replied realising that it would give us 4 whole days of partying nonstop at one of the worlds greatest festivals.
And truly great it is. To really appreciate Benacassim you have to get off your arse and actually go there. TV, photos, media... even your mates can't do it justice. There can't be many festivals in the world where you can actually have a holiday and chill out on the beach during the day and then party your collective's off as bands play from 6pm till 7am the next morning. Tasty.
True the whole place is set on one giant slab of concrete but think of the advantages - easier to clean and nicer to pogo up and down to!
The festival is rapidly taking on the mantle of "who gives a shite about what bands are confirmed lets just book the tickets and go" - Something only Glastonbury, Latitude and perhaps Coachella have done in the past.
That said there were bands . Bands in bucket (and spade) loads...( see what we did there? - Benicassim = holiday. Holiday = bucket + spade. Yeh yeh whatever.)
Fridays hi-lights included The Temper Trap playing to far more people than even they thought would turn up, The Paris Riots giving us some dirty old rock and roll and Kasabian proving once and for all that there ascension to festival headliners was no fluke and in actual fact who did give a shit about Oasis? Not us...
Below is a little clip from Kasabian who headlined on the Friday at 1AM
Saturday brought on a slightly odder mix of bands - the band of the moment Mumford and Sons killed a massive crowd on the second stage and they were third down from being headliners! Supajam was on stage to witness it and can honestly say was one of the highlights of the year. Seeing 20,000 people go bat shit to the folk sounds of "The Cave" was more than a laugh.
On the main stage Julian Casablancas drew in a great crowd and seemed genuinely amazed so many had turned out for his slot and was heard to call out to the crowd "Holy shit, look how many of you are out there!" after playing "River Of Breaklights" , adding: "That was crazy, man!"" Hot Chip put on a brilliant show and got everyone jumping around - not that we needed warming up, it was 30 degree heat out there and that was at midnight!
Vampire Weekend seemed a little of an odd choice to headline but we didn't care - by then we had legged it over to grove away to the sounds of XFM DJ Steve Harris who partied hard for several hours with a heaving crowd.
Saturday was the big one for many. Ash started proceedings with a communal singalong form the main stage and included strong new single "Carnal Love'. Following after it seemed like 30,000 had turned up to see The Specials and have a bounce around to "Message To You Rudy" - Maybe they just wanted to see if they could get Terry Hall to smile (they couldn't) No matter, the band sounded as fresh as ever and was the perfect anecdote for the sun setting at around 9pm.
Ian Brown is indeed a legend but so our PIL and they won the toss (sorry Ian) so we bundled over to the Fiberfib stage and watched as a 50 something punk icon had a meltdown in front of us towards the end of his set and start shouting at his band mates who hadn't picked up on his instructions to carry on playing their final song "Religion". "Keep on fucking playing" he yelled as they wound the track up. In the end they walked off the stage rather confused to Lydon swearing at them saying ""Public Image Runaway Ltd," , before adding: "It looks like I'm all alone, as per fucking usual." Gotta love him! To be honest it was pure warm up to the wave of anger unleashed from headliners the Prodigy.
"All my Spanish people make some fucking noise" they called out - who were we to argue. So for the next hour and a half we duly did and the tension, dancing and screaming continually ramped up ending with a frenzied "Smack My Bitch Up" where 30,000 all sat down on Maxim's command only to go communally bonkers when the drum and bassline kicked in. Check out a very small sampler below...
Sunday brought in the holiday favourites Dizzeee Rascal, Lily Allen and Leftfield though sadly Lily had to cancel at the last minute which made way for Ellie Goldings performance on the main stage. Gorrilaz rounded off the festival and brought in De La Soul, Bobby Womack, the Syrian National Orchestra and Bootie Brown as special guests to wind it all up.
So there you have it. 4 days of brilliant music, good mates, sun, sea and the best back stage area we have ever seen at any festival including full on swimming pool and buckets of beer (quite literally)
Our thanks go out for Vince Power for making the whole thing happen and feel so damn essential. Roll on 2011 and book your tickets early!
Finally we'd just like to say how much we enjoyed our journey home. The great about easy Jet is it belittles us all - Supajam thoroughly enjoyed ear wigging and travelling back with both Ian Brown and Johnny Lydon (nice Persil white shorts Johnny) - we also wondered does Ian Brown really have to wear his name on his T-Shirt? Really Ian really?
Till next year...
