Lady Gaga made and spent an awful lot of money in the pursuit of being a fashion icon. She's not been entirely successful - kids used to want to dress like Madonna, not many stick on their latex red facemask for a trip down the shops - but she certainly has a reputation. And the problem with reputations is you have ever more to live up to. So having covered all the fabrics, Lady Gaga has turned to another product: meat. Yes, for the cover of Vogue Japan Gaga has posed wearing just a bikini made of raw meat.
Gaga's camp haven't spoken about the symbolism yet, but when we see an attractive young person covered in tasty foodstuffs our mouth waters. Unfortunately, we appear to be meat eating facists, as PETA (which doesn't stand for People Eating Tasty Animals) are trying to turn this into a controversy. Their president Ingrid Newkirk - who presumably exists solely on plants and air - has been quoted as saying:
"Lady Gaga's job is to do outlandish things, and this certainly qualifies as outlandish because meat is something you want to avoid putting on or in your body," which pretty much rules sex out then Ingrid. She went on "No matter how beautifully it is presented, flesh from a tortured animal is flesh from a tortured animal. Meat represents bloody violence and suffering, so if that's the look they were going for - they achieved it." To which we can only point out the dark, unspoken and regrettable undercurrent in today's society - that violence is, to half the people involved, enjoyable - and say that if anyone was going for that look, it's Gaga. Oh and if she'd like to come round for a barbecue, we'll provide something for her to change into...
