A couple of weeks ago, Supajam brought you a small review of a band who's new single 'Capital', released on 25th July, has been echoing around the office with its catchy riffs and layers of synths.
Films of colour are, Andy Clutterbuck (vocals), James Hatcher (guitar), Jack Allinson (bass/synths) and James Rees-Flynn (drums). We were lucky enough to catch up with the boys to talk mescalin, meditation and marmite.
SJ: First thing's first, we love your name. How did it come about?
FOC: Thank you! The name originates from an Aldous Huxley essay called 'Heaven and Hell' - an extremely vivid account of one man's experience on mescalin.
SJ: Give us some background on your musical careers!
FOC: Of course. We've all been playing for years in various different bands before Films of Colour.
Each person's background contributes to the music we make today.
SJ: Who would you most like to play alongside with and why?
FOC: We would absolutely love to support Radiohead - or even better have them support us!
SJ: Who are your musical influences?
FOC: I could go on and on, but a select few are Radiohead, Bloc Party, Miike Snow & Arcade Fire. And for our guitarist, James Hatcher, the Rodopski Solisti Orchestra - he just can't get enough.
SJ: What's the best gig you've ever played?
FOC: We had some great shows supporting Cage the Elephant on their UK tour, although our most recent gigs keep getting more and more exciting as the band progresses.
SJ: How do you prepare for a gig?
FOC: Simultaneous meditation and screaming.
SJ: Tell us a funny story about Films of Colour?
FOC: Our drummer, James Rees, once told someone that Films of Colour were so great that he couldn't wait to see them play that night. Later he realised that person was the promoter. He wore a fake moustache whilst playing that evening.
SJ: Can you describe your sound to us in a sentence?
FOC: If I told you I'd have to kill you.
SJ: You shot a music video for your track 'Capital' where you bombard the streets of London with giant letters spelling out Capital, was this fun?
FOC: What was it like working with the public? It looks like it was a lot of fun. It was great.. We love meeting new people and everyone was really enthusiastic. The variety of people taking part was really fantastic - we had grandmas, business men and woman, young kids, students and even dogs
involved. This was actually the second time we've done it and it definitely won't be the last.
SJ: Do you like Marmite?
FOC: Hell yeah.
SJ: What's been the highlight of your career so far?
FOC: Receiving a phone call from Chris Martin was pretty cool.
SJ: What's next for Films of Colour?
FOC: Our new single Capital is released on the 25th July 2011, so we'll be promoting that for the next few months. We aim to release another single towards the end of the year and we are constantly working on new music for our first album which will be released next year.
