It took the police eight hours to shut down an illegal rave over the weekend

You know an impromptu rave is pretty ridiculous when it takes police eight hours to shut it down. Why, you ask? Well, police in the south west just didn't have the "resources" to shut it down.

Complaints about the party in Vallis Vale near Frome were made at around 1.30am, filling up the police's Facebook page, but it took officers until 9.30am to turn the music off.

Chief Superintendent Ian Smith of Avon and Somerset Police said he allowed to continue you due to health and safety concerns.

"If we are aware in advance about a potential event, the law allows us to take action to close it down. However, if it has already started, an assessment has to be made." He said. "There were a large number of people in attendance and we needed to have the right number of resources in place to make sure they could leave without putting themselves or others at risk."

An investigation is continuing into the rave.
