Jim Carrey makes first statement after being sued over his ex-girlfriend's suicide

Jim Carrey has made his first statement after he has been sued over the suicide of his ex-girlfriend Cathroina White.

White was found dead in September 2015 after overdosing on prescription drugs at the age of 30. However, Carrey is facing a wrongful death lawsuit lodged her estranged husband by Mark Burton, White's estranged husband.

Burton's lawsuit, accuses Carrey of using his "immense wealth and celebrity status" to illegally obtain the prescription drugs involved in her death, covering up his alleged involvement. "After her death, Mr Carrey took steps to conceal and obfuscate his involvement and culpability in Ms White’s untimely and tragic death," the complaint alleges.

Carrey has since responded with a statement, describing this as a "heartless attempt" to exploit both himself and "the woman I loved". Carrey writes: "What a terrible shame. It would be easy for me to get in a back room with this man’s lawyer and make this go away, but there are some moments in life when you have to stand up and defend your honour against the evil in this world."

"I will not tolerate this heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved. Cat’s troubles were born long before I met her and sadly her tragic end was beyond anyone’s control. I really hope that some day soon people will stop trying to profit from this and let her rest in peace."
