John Mayer Apologizes for using the N word when White

The basic rule of twenty first century life is you’re not, rightly, allowed to use racial slurs. If you do, you have to be the target of that slur. Hence black hip-hop artists can say the "n" word, because they’re the targets of hundreds of years of oppression, exploitation and hate, while bland MOR rocker John Mayer can’t, because he’s never been oppressed for his ethnicity, although he is rather hated. So when Mayer came out with the following in an interview with Playboy, he got roundly lambasted:

”‘What does it feel like now to have a ‘hood pass?’ And by the way, it’s sort of a contradiction in terms, because if you really had a ‘hood pass, you could call it a nigger pass.”

What John? When did that ever seem like a good thing to say. He’s now turned to twitter to try and defuse the mess, and instead of just looking like a wealthy white man with no apparent knowledge of history, comes off an as even bigger fool:

"Re: using the 'N word' in an interview. I am sorry that I used the word. And it's such a shame that I did because the point I was trying to make was in the exact opposite spirit of the word itself… It was arrogant of me to think I could intellectualise using it, because I realise that there's no intellectualising a word that is so emotionally charged."

Yeah, intellectualizing, that’s what you were doing.
