Madonna has recently played in Russia, and guess what, she managed to upset people. But this time it wasn’t because of the outrageous ticket prices or creaking new songs, but great issues which deserve to be promoted: Pussy Riot and gay rights. The former has been covered here in the last few days, and this story focuses on Madonna giving out pink anti-homophobia wristbands to her fans and telling the crowd to “fight for the right to be free.”
Great stuff, and sadly much needed in Russia which has severe problems when it comes to accepting gays as normal human beings. If you think we’re being a bit harsh there, may we point out that Moscow has recently banned gay pride marches, not for a little bit, but for an entire fucking century. Now, Madonna is being sued for $10.5 million by a group of Russian homophobes who claim the audience and the country have suffered "psychological stress and emotional shock."
Part of this alliance of hateful fuckwits is the Union of Russian Citizens, and they spat out "We demand that she pay for moral damage suffered by St Petersburg residents as a result of her actions during the show on August 9. We must defend our right to normal cultural life without propaganda of values and views that contradict the Russian culture."
Meanwhile a bigot called Alexei Kolokov told the Guardian: “Maybe someone does not see the link but after Madonna's concert maybe some boy becomes gay, some girl becomes lesbian, fewer children are born as a result and this big country cannot defend its borders - for me it causes moral suffering.” This is why Pussy Riot are needed.
