Man kills himself and injures 12 in German music festival blast

A 27-year-old man killed himself and injured 12 in a blast in the vicinity of a German music festival in Ansbach last night.

Said to have been an asylum seeker from Syria, the man had a history of making attempts on his own life. Wearing a back pack, he was denied entrance into the festival a few hours before for not having a ticket. So he set off the explosion at a Wine Bar nearby the festival - nine were injured and three are currently in a serious condition.

The Bavarian interior minister, Joachim Herrmann told Deutsche Presse-Agentur: “My personal view is that I unfortunately think it is very likely this really was an Islamist suicide attack. The obvious intent to kill more people at least indicates an Islamist background.”

A spokesman named Michael Schrotberger from the prosecutor's office in Ansbach said: “If there is an Islamist link or not is purely speculation at this point,”

More than 2,000 people had been in the crowd in the 40,000-populated south-western town Ansbach, which is also home to a US army base.
