Music legend Leonard Cohen passes away at the age of 82

Leonard Cohen passed away in the early hours of this morning.

A statement on the legend's Facebook page was released first: "It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away," the statement said.

Cohen had been suffering from poor health for a while, however, he released his 14th studio album 'You Want It Darker' earlier in the year. Speaking with the press after the release, he detailed how he felt 'ready to die'.

His son Adam told Rolling Stone: "My father passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles with the knowledge that he had completed what he felt was one of his greatest records. He was writing up until his last moments with his unique brand of humour."

Some of his most popular tunes Bird On The Wire, Hallelujah and So Long Marianne were written about his lover and muse Marianne Ihlen, whom he met in Greece in the 1960s. When she died in this past July, Cohen wrote: "Well Marianne, it's come to this time when we are really so old and our bodies are falling apart and I think I will follow you very soon."

Rest in piece.
