One in every eight pounds spent in Britain is spent in a Tesco store, so it’s no surprise the supermarket behemoth should turn its hungry eye to other business opportunities. Next up: iTunes. Tesco has partnered with several other companies to produce ‘Digital Locker’, where you can buy a track from their store, which is then put into your personalized databank (‘digital locker’), and from here you can upload them to MP3 players or other media players. If you’re thinking that sounds pretty convoluted, you’re right, and you’re limited to six users and twelve pieces of equipment per ‘locker’.
This seems to be the latest development in the trend for people to use everything via the web, stored elsewhere, rather than buying something you can hold and definitely own. Compare this to amazon.com’s shop which is actually trying to help the consumer by giving them an MP3 they can use. On the plus side, at least your digital locker can’t burn down. The system starts in October, and everyone who has a Tesco Clubcard will get a locker automatically. Because this is Tesco, and they own us.
