The Founder of 808 makers Roland had died
You might not know the name Ikutaro Kakehashi, but if you’ve listened to music over the last thirty years salute the man, for he founded Roland. Without him, we might now have the TR-808, MIDI music and a hell of a lot more. Now, sadly, Ikutaro Kakehashi has died.
The 808 was launched in 1980, and appeared on nothing less than Sexual Healing by Marvin Gaye… it was used more recently in Kanye West’s 808s and Heartbreak. Roland was a titan of modern music, but he touched on a personal level, Roland’s Tommy Snyder called him a second father:
