The Game of Thrones coffee error produced some staggering economics
We’re sure you’ve all heard about this by now, and it’s not a spoiler: in Sunday’s Game of Thrones, one shot saw a very twenty first century coffee cup left on a table as all the fantasy shenanigans went on around. Eagle eyed viewers noticed in a picosecond and the social media storm followed. The team behind Thrones have now digitally removed the cup.
 
So we all had a lot of viral fun with it. The memes went crazy. But here’s the thing: although the mug and logo were from a small shop local to the filming, most assumed it was the green of Starbucks and used them in the memes. So many eyes saw so many references to Starbucks in the last few days that the free advertising from the show would, according to CNBC, cost $2.3 billion to pay for.
