Shortly, the US population will get to vote for their new president, and they’ve got the choice of a man who’s lied a lot, and a man who’s lied a lot and doesn’t like gays. An awkward situation to be sure, but some musicians are taking sides… unfortunately, they’re getting hate mail for it. The National, with their wonderful but depressing music, recently played a campaign rally for democratic candidate Barack Obama. This was swiftly followed by a load of hate mail from the other side.
But the band are staying committed, telling The Lantern "I know we've gotten responses from people [that] don't like the fact that we've taken a position on it," said singer Matt Berninger. "I don't actually think artists or musicians necessarily have a responsibility to do that. But in our case, the five of us…talked about it and we were like, 'Yeah, it's worth it, for sure'.”
