Last night The XX won the Mercury Music Prize, an award you might be sceptical of given it’s voted for by a panel of judges and not the music buying public at large. Indeed, winning the Mercury is no guarantee of lasting success, as for every Arctic Monkeys there’s a Speech ‘I got dropped by my record label’ Debelle.
But what the Mercury does seem to provide every year is a short term sales boost. The XX had already risen in the charts after being nominated, but received a 500% increase on Amazon in just the hour after the announcement. This was obviously helped by the MP3 download of the whole album costing just £3, a bargain if you want a listen, but of less benefit to the band’s bank accounts. The percentage is expected to increase as people read the news this morning. And yes fans, I Am Kloot also broke the top ten for a bit.
