Third Eye Blind Trolls Republicans at Republican National Convention

Third Eye Blind Trolls Republicans at Republican National Convention

A lot of fans were very worried for the late 90s pop-rock band when they were scheduled to play at an event linked to the Republican National Convention. Many people criticise republicans for their stances on global warming, gun control and their extreme religious motives such as ex Republican Party leader candidate Ted Cruz who openly rejects the scientific consensus on climate change. Disappointment grew as fans would have to associate Third Eye Blind with republicans, however band members such as Stephen Jenkins had underlying motives than what would be expected from them.

Earlier this morning in Cleveland, Ohio, the band took to the stage at a Republican National Convention linked charity being hosted at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Suddenly, singer Stephen Jenkins spoke out and made his move. He began to taunt and mock the republicans in the crowd by attacking the party’s positions on climate change and gay marriage. A video shared on Twitter shows the band getting booed, followed by Stephen Jenkins replying, “You can boo all you want but I’m the mother f**king artist up here”.

The band continued to anger the audience by refusing to play the band’s biggest hits. However, they did play ‘Jumper’ after Jenkins explained that it is a song he wrote about a gay friend’s suicide. “To love this song is to take into your heart the message ... and not live your life in fear and imposing that fear on other people”. At the end of their performance Jenkins asked the crowd to “raise your hand if you believe in science” which was met with more boos from the crowd.

Do You think the band’s plan to troll republicans was effective?
