UK Music Festivals Hit By Measles Epidemic

Music Festivals Hotbed for Measles

Been to any music festivals lately? Maybe even Glastonbury. While you were being star struck by witnessing Adele on stage, you were also at an increased risk of being infected by measles.

Public Health England has warned people that music festivals can be described as an idle place for the infection to spread due to the large numbers of people mixing together. Let’s not forget that you’ll be spending most of the time practically rubbing up against other people in the dense crowds and also having to share the same toilets with those same people.

It is said that a significant number of cases have been link to various music events, with 36 cases reported in June and July alone. Exclusively, Glastonbury festival had a total of 16 cases of measles infections.  What’s worse is that more infected people are expected to be discovered as the outbreaks are investigated. At least three people of the 36 cases are known to have developed symptoms, but decided to go to the music events anyway.

Measles is a virus that can cause rashes and cold like symptoms for most people, but could be deadly for others. It is highly-infectious virus and people planning to attend other festivals are advised to ensure they have been vaccinated against the disease.

However, if you haven’t been vaccinated yet, look out for these symptoms:

  • old-like symptoms, such as a runny nose, sneezing, and a cough

  • sore, red eyes that may be sensitive to light

  • a high temperature (fever), which may reach around 40C (104F)

  • small greyish-white spots on the inside of the cheeks

  • a few days later, a red-brown blotchy rash
