We were saved from a 90s Wesley Snipes Black Panther movie

We were saved from a 90s Wesley Snipes Black Panther movie
The 2018 Black Panther has been a critical success, even being labelled the best of the MCU so far. But it could have been weighed down by an atrocious 90s version, because Wesley Snipes has been speaking about his attempts to get one made then with him in it, and anyone who remembers Blade will be going ‘oh god, that would have been marvellously appalling.’ Case in point: he wanted to do it in a leotard with cat ears.
We’re being a little unfair to Wesley, because he certainly had the vision. As he told Hollywood Reporter “I think Black Panther spoke to me because he was noble, and he was the antithesis of the stereotypes presented and portrayed about Africans, African history and the great kingdoms of Africa… It had cultural significance, social significance. It was something that the black community and the white community hadn’t seen before.
Many people don’t know that there were fantastic, glorious periods of African empires and African royalty — Mansa Musa and some of the wealthiest men in the world compared to the wealth of today. That was always very, very attractive. And I loved the idea of the advanced technology. I thought that was very forward thinking.”
Others in Hollywood had very different ideas, and then we come to the thing that would have made it a mess: “the technology wasn’t there to do what they had already created in the comic book,” as anyone who’s seen the poor stuff in Blade knows.
