Sales of Rock Band hit $1 Billion

You’ve probably seen them, people who spend a huge amount of time and energy playing music themed games, hours learning to control their guitar shaped controller to “play” music, when they probably could have learnt to play the actual guitar. The slightly more socially friendly Rock Band, which still involves learning “instruments” but at least requires you to be with friends at the same time for full effect, has proved hugely successful, hitting sales of $1 billion in the US alone after just fifteen months on sale. Guitar Hero, Rock Band’s rival, has also generated some music sales, with Rolling Stone reporting 40 million tunes have been downloaded for it. Will they inspire anyone to pick up real instuments?
