Sobule Jokes about Perry Taking her Title

Even if you hate pop music, you’ve probably heard about Katy Perry’s 2008 chart topper ‘I Kissed a Girl’. What you might not know – and kudos if you do – is that there was another song with that title. It was released in 1995 by alternative singer-with-a-social-conscience Jill Sobule and is a much more tender song than Perry’s tits out number. Sobule had kept quiet about this despite numerous questions as whether she felt her idea was stolen, but has now joked about it in an article with The Rumpus. At least, we believe it’s in jest, unlike Rolling Stone who are reporting it as serious.

Sobule first explains that some of her friends got very angry, and her mother asked if she’d make any money from Perry (she can’t as song titles can’t be copyrighted), and that Perry was signed by the guy who signed her...implying that someone knew of the title clash. Then she adds the corking: “Okay, maybe, if I really think about it, there were a few jealous and pissed off moments. So here goes, for the first time in an interview: F*** you Katy Perry, you f***ing stupid, maybe “not good for the gays,” title thieving, haven’t heard much else, so not quite sure if you’re talented, f***ing little slut…God that felt good.” We laughed.
