Album review for The Doups 'Small Town Gossip'

This week will see the release of ‘Small Town Gossip’ the debut album by the Portuguese blues indie rock four piece The Doups. You may remember them from our ‘Fast Track To FIB’ competition back in 2009. The Doups made it to the final five and narrowly missed out on winning the entire competition!

The band sounds like an infusion of The Wombats, Two Door Cinema Club and Hard-Fi all rolled into one. Fast paced indie rock but with injections of blues guitar scattered throughout.

The album starts off with an extremely catchy track called ‘Just As Predicted’ with its funky guitar riffs and hooking chorus it’s sure to be stuck in your head after just one listen. The next set of songs follow suite, simple but brilliantly crafted tunes that are a pleasure for the ears. They remind us of the songs that play on the transitions in the inbetweeners series, tasty upbeat indie rock that make your body just want to sway to the music!

We would pick out the tracks ‘Just As Predicted’ ‘I Said’ and ‘Scratching My Face’ as highlights on the album, but any of the tracks could be a single release as there all outstanding.

The album is packed full of energy, nearly every song is a fast paced funky rock anthem! The guitarists do a great job keeping you interested and making every song differ with the mighty riffs they deliver and the singer João Rodrigues’ voice sounds very familiar but his Portuguese accent makes it very unique. Overall everything comes together perfectly; nothing is out of place or unnecessary. If you’re losing faith in music these days or just looking for some new feel good music then definitely check this album out. We here at SupaJam are hoping big things for these Portuguese rockers and are sure to be hearing their tracks all over the place soon enough.

Although the album doesn’t bring anything new to the scene, it does what it does beautifully and in a world where guitar music seems to be dying out were happy to give this album a solid 8/10!

Lucky for you the band is releasing the album free today on http://www.optimusdiscos.com/  so be sure to take a look.

We’ll leave you with the video to the new single 'Joyful'. As always let us know what you guys think.

Also have a look at their myspace to listen to a few demos and older tracks http://www.myspace.com/thedoups
